Mikumi national park location: Mikumi national park was established in 1964 with the main aim of conserving the rare species of Antelopes that were found in the area. The park covers the total land area of 3,230 square kilometers. Its one of the current hot cake for tourist in the South of Tanzania as its nicknamed as “little Serengeti national park”. The open savannah grassland that is dotted with the Acacia trees and the Boabab trees makes itself being compared to the Northern Tanzania tourist destinations. The park is named after the village Mikumi village was got its name from the rare tree species that was common at the village. The park shares its ecosystem with African largest game reserve that is Selous game reserve.

Mikumi national park is located in the South of Tanzania, it is more accessible from the former capital city Dar es Salaam. It lies 280 kilometers away from the largest Tanzania city Dar es Salaam. The park is located near the town of Mogoro which is 107 kilometers away from the park in the middle of the famous mountains in Tanzania. It borders the African largest national reserve that is Selous Game Reserve in the South. It borders the Udzungwa Mountains, Uluguru Mountains and Malundwe Mountains in the North East. The park is transversed by the hill belt that crosses from the East to the West. The park also borders Uvidunda Mountains in the West. The beautiful scenery of the Malundwe Mountains which is made up of three peaks with its ridge running from North to South.

The park is crossed by the Dar es Salaam high way that connects the city to the sourthern major towns like Iringa and other African countries in the South. The construction of this highway opened the gates of the park to most of the tourists as it made it more accessible. The highway is passes through the entry gates of the park hence making guests even to use public means to acess the park. It located in the West of Dar es Salaam around 280 kilometers on the way that continues to the famous south National parks and Reserves. The Mikumi national park location can also be tress from the Big Selous, Katavi, Ruaha or Udzungwa national parks where the park is found on the North of those parks. The newly opened route that connects the park to those parks has made it possible for the travelers to access the park from the Northern part of Selous

 How to access Mikumi national park?

This is one of the popular questions that travelers especially first time travelers ask as they are planning for their trip to Mikumi National park. You donot need to worry much, the park can be easily accessed from all directions. Depending on where you are, where you entend to start your journey to this park from. The highway from the famous Dar es salaam to Mikumi is 24 hours serviced highway with both public means and private cars. The journey through Morogoro town takes around 4 hours drive from Dar es Salaam. You can book a bus or use reputable tour operator who will give you all inclusive package. The buses are tight and you need to book them a day before your travel date. If you’re on the Southern part of the park in Selous or any other national park you can access the park on its south though the roads are better during the dry season and challenging during the wet season. When using this roads please use 4×4 wheel drive safari cars due to its roan terrain.

Alternatively if your in the interior of Tanzania that is around Arusha , Moshi and others there are chattered flights that operate daily to Dar es salaam or selous game reserve. You can use these flights then your driver guide will then pick you from the airfield and transfer you to the park.
